Cougars Rap Pingry, Blank Elizabeth, Fall to Dayton

Senior Sophia DeMarco blasted her 11th home run of the season and went 4-for-4 with a double, four RBI, four runs scored, a walk and a stolen base as the Cranford High School softball team defeated Pingry, 13-8, on April 29. The Cougars separated themselves from Pingry with six runs in the seventh inning. On April 30, the Cougars shut out the Elizabeth Minutemen, 10-0, in five innings; however, on May 1, they came up on the short end of a 3-2 loss to the Dayton Bulldogs.

Maddy DeLong also rapped a home run and had four RBI against Pingry. Ava Orr went 2-for-4 with a home run and Brooke Jones drilled a pair of doubles, walked and scored three runs. Adrienne Lettini singled, scored twice andhadanRBI.SophiaAlverez-Gomez doubled,walkedandscoredtwice.Ciara Conley had an RBI single. Sarah Hartmann singled and had two RBI.

Taylor Francis went 2-for-4 with a home run for 7-6 Pingry. Delaney Swain doubled, singled and scored twice. Casey McKeon went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ella Royster went 3for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and run scored. Melia Ahn singled twice and scored once. Ellie Solomon had three singles and an RBI. Aria Sakasena singled twice and scored once. Genevieve Provence had an RBI single. Claire Sartorius singled.

DeMarco went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI against 6-7 Elizabeth. DeLong went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a walk. Conley had an RBI single. Orr went 2-for-3 and scored once. Alverez-Gomez whacked a two-run home run. Ellie Queenan went 2-for-3 and scored once. Alexa Stulpin scored once. Jones hit a home run, walked once and scored twice. Winning pitcher DeMarco recorded three strikeouts and permitted just two hits.

Dayton’s Lila Carroll won the pitchers’ duel against Brooke Bentrewicz, limiting the 8-9 Cougars to just two hits, a walk and two hit batters, while recording seven strikeouts. Both teams’ runs were scored in the first inning. DeMarco went 1-for-2, was hit, stole two bases and scored once. Alvarez-Gomez had an RBI single. Conley walked, was hit, stole two bases and scored.

Angela Gatto delivered a two-run single. Alyssa Santangelo, Charlie Badalamenti and Sofia Badalamenti each scored once. Kate Buckley and Natalie Mignone each singled.
