Raiders Nip New Prov. Pioneers, Jolt ALJ Crusaders, Union City, Glen Ridge

After dropping a very close, 5-4, decision to Westfield, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School baseball picked up it seventh straight victory with an 11-1, leveling of Glen Ridge in Scotch Plains on April 27 after a 13-4 drudging of Union City on April 25. Two days before, the Raiders nipped the New Providence Pioneers, 5-4, then went on to jolt theALJohnson Crusaders, 5-2, on April 24.

Jack Sponheimer went 2-for-3 and scored twice against the Pioneers, while Joe LaRosa doubled, singled, stole a base, scored and had an RBI. Ryan Quinones doubled, singled, stole a base and had two RBI. Jaden Carpien singled and scored. Evan Doyle singled, stole a base and had an RBI. Anthony Veglia had an RBI single and walked. Chris Kennedy singled and Jack Masterson walked and scored once. Winning pitcher Matt Capozzollo struck out three batters in four innings.

Pioneer Jake Monaco went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Andrew Kowantz singled twice and stole a base. Luca Vitale doubled, singled, scored once and had an RBI. Vinny Bisaccia doubled and scored. Robby Roth, who singled, pitched six innings and struck out six. Sean Reilly, who had an RBI single, pitched one inning and was charged with the loss.

Against the 3-8 ALJ Crusaders, Carpien doubled, had three RBI, stole a base and scored once. LaRosa doubled, singled, walked, stole a base and scored twice. Matt Greisman went 2-for-3. Evan Doyle doubled and scored once. Mike Bellistri had an RBI single. Sponheimer stole a base and scored. Winning pitcher Quinones recorded six strikeouts in six innings. Veglia relieved for an inning.

Rob Gallagher and Justin Zdeb both doubled for the Crusaders. Losing pitcher Sean Patterson (7 strikeouts), Vince Cilento and Brody Gulbin each singled. Aidan Rogers and Mike Schelhorn each scored once. Raphael DaRocha had two RBI.

Carpien went 2-for-3 with a home run, walk, two RBI and three runs scored against 8-5 Union City. Kennedy homered, singled and had two RBI. LaRosa went 2-for-3, walked, stole a base and scored three runs as did Quinones who also had an RBI. Winning pitcher CJ Bates (3 strikeouts, 2 hit batters) doubled, walked and had three RBI. Evan Doyle had an RBI single and scored. Sponheimer singled, stole a base and scored twice.

Guillermo Soto rapped a pair of doubles for Union City. Luis Santiago went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Jayden Peres doubled and scored. Diego Miranda had an RBI double. Ivan Morejon and Chris Mejia each tapped an RBI single.

Evan Doyle and Capozzollo split the pitching duties for the 11-4 Raiders against Glen Ridge when they had a special salute to members of the 2004 and 2009 Union County Tournament Champions prior to the game. LaRosa led the charge with a triple, double, walk and two runs scored. Bates doubled, had two RBI and scored. Kennedy rapped a couple of singles and had two RBI. Carpien walked three times and scored twice.
