Blue Devils Fall to Elizabeth, N. Providence in Girls Hoops

The Elizabeth High School girls basketball team erased a 28-24, halftime deficit with a 17-8 third-quarter run then managed to hold off a Blue Devil comeback in the fourth quarter to salvage a 50-48 victory in Westfield on January 4. Two days later, the New Providence Pioneers outpaced the Blue Devils 48-31.

The Elizabeth High School girls basketball team erased a 28-24, halftime deficit with a 17-8 third-quarter run then managed to hold off a Blue Devil comeback in the fourth quarter to salvage a 50-48 victory in Westfield on January 4. Two days later, the New Providence Pioneers outpaced the Blue Devils 48-31.

Mairin Fowler led the Blue Devils in scoring with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, against Elizabeth and added five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Sophie Lane finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Sara Rooney put up seven points, including a 3-pointer, and added two rebounds, two steals and an assist. Megan Logan pulled nine boards, dished out five assists and added six points, three steals and two blocks. Catherine Oliveira finished with five points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Lucy Burke grabbed seven rebounds and added a block and assist. Erin Doherty finished with four points, two assists and two rebounds.

Alexa Koon led the 6-2 Lady Minutemen with 18 points, four steals, six rebounds and a block. Alani Gordon sank 11 points (trip 3-pointers) and added three steals, three assists and two rebounds. Dynasty Chandler recorded 11 rebounds, eight points, three assists and three steals.Ashanti Dewalt had four points, three steals and a rebound. Jah’nae Lembrick had nine points, seven assists, seven steals, four rebounds and a block.

Lane scored eight points and added six rebounds, an assist and a steal against the 8-2 Pioneers. Oliveira had six points, seven rebounds and two steals. Logan had four blocks, four points, six rebounds and a steal. Fowler finished with six points, a rebound and an assist. Rooney sank a 3-pointer and added four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Burke (5 rebounds, 2 steals) and Doherty (2 rebounds, steal) each scored two points.

Pioneer Brenna Slattery netted 16 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Jasmine Miller finished with 12 points (2 3-pointers), four steals, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Grace Kinum had six assists, six points, seven rebounds and three steals. Kyra Licari had five assists, four points, two rebounds and a steal. Ava Kelly had two points, a steal, assist and a rebound.
