Raiders Reject Crusaders, Cougars in Boys Lacrosse

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys lacrosse team opened its season in a positive tone with a pair of victories. First the Raiders pulled ahead of the hosting Cranford Cougars in a big way with a five-goal third quarter en route to an 11-1 triumph at Memorial Field on March 27. Next, the 2-0 Raiders traveled to Clark and rejected the AL Johnson Crusaders, 16-5, on March 29.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys lacrosse team opened its season in a positive tone with a pair of victories. First the Raiders pulled ahead of the hosting Cranford Cougars in a big way with a five-goal third quarter en route to an 11-1 triumph at Memorial Field on March 27. Next, the 2-0 Raiders traveled to Clark and rejected the AL Johnson Crusaders, 16-5, on March 29.

Sophomore attacker Nick Homer, who led the Raiders with 39 goals and 17 assists, fired in two goals and added three assists, while scooping a ground ball against the Cougars. Sam Jimenez scored twice. Ryan Scarpa (3 ground balls – GB), Brian Klopfer (2 GB) and Vance Slack (GB) each netted a goal and an assist. Colin Kochanowicz (3 GB), Ben Filler (2 GB) andAsher Silva (GB) each scored once. Will Morgan scored the lone goal for the Cougars.

Raider face-off specialist Ryan Mauer won 11 of 12 face-offs, while Lou Kelly and Noah Brown each scooped four GBs. Cooper Dupuis had three GBs. Caden Matulonis (assist) and Griffin Hough each had two GBs. Connor Scarpa and Callum Fynes each had one GB. Goalkeeper Joe Marranca made four saves. Cougars Luke Hoeffler and Jared Acinapura scooped five and four GBs, respectively, and goalkeeper Ethan McNab recorded 21 saves.

Homer got even nastier against the Crusaders and stuffed in four goals, dished out four assists and scooped six GBs. Klopfer netted two goals and five assists. Ryan Scarpa had two goals, a pair of assists and a GB. Lorenzo Tittanegro had three goals and a GB. Kelly had two goals and four GBs. Kochanowicz (2 GBs) had a goal and three assists. Slack and Silva each scored once. Matulonis, Connor Scarpa, Filler and Dupuis each scooped two GBs. Goalkeeper Matt Krantz made for saves.

Lucas Spearnock had two goals and an assist for the 0-1 Crusaders, while Adrian Verona had two goals and Mason Spearnock scored once. Nick Cilento scooped six GBs, Matt Pereira had five GBs, Julian Koon had four and Lou Mentzel had three GBs. Matt Robertazzi (assist) and Nic Carlucci each had two GBs. Keeper Jake Szarszewski made 10 saves.
