Westfield BOE Sees Increase in State Aid, Reduces Ballot Ask

WESTFIELD — The Westfield Board of Education announced Tuesday that it has significantly decreased the amount of funding it will ask taxpayers to approve on the Tuesday, April 15 ballot, thanks to an unexpected boost in state aid. The district received an increase of 6 percent in aid, totaling nearly $500,000, and Brendan Galligan of the Finance and Facilities Committee told the board that the funds will go directly towards reducing the amount of money it is seeking from residents. The district originally planned on requesting roughly $800,000 in order to fund the salaries and benefits for three teachers, but will now only ask voters to approve an additional $302,743 to the annual budget.
