Blue Devils Boys, Girls Win Section Track & Field Titles

COUGAR GIRLS WIN 3 EVENTS, GET 4TH IN SECTION

The Westfield High School boys and girls won their respective titles at the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Championships held at Ridge High School on May 31 and June 1. The Blue Devil boys placed first in six events and dusted the field with a 125 team total, well ahead of Piscataway at 84, while the SPF Raiders placed fifth at 44. The Blue Devil girls had a much closer competition and took first with 88.33 points just ahead of Franklin Township at 86, while the Raiders were third at 63 points.

Blue Devil Alex Valencia crossed first in the 800 with a time of 1:55.27, followed by teammate Ryan Daly at 1:56.5, while Jimmy Gildea was fourth at 1:57.6. Valencia also won the 1,600 at 4:10.62, followed by Avery Keith at 4:11.08. Daly finished fourth at 4:18.12. Keith took top honors in the 3,200 with a time of 9:04.16. Tage Mehta at 9:24.45 and Graham Korins at 9:35.96 finished 7-8.

Blue Devil Manny Gayanilo crossed first in the 400-hurdles at 53.62 and Tyler Pietrewicz finished eighth at 57.83. Gayanilo also won the 400 at 49.53 and Raider Blake Jackson was fifth at 51.05. Blue Devils Jim Hamilton, Kaleb Stoeckman, Eamon Mason and Gildea won the 4×800 at 7:52.23. Rowan McMahill, Noah Petrassi, Mason and Gayanilo finished second in the 4×400 at 3:20.6.

Raider Zuriel Battle won the discus with a toss of 146-5. Blue Devils Noah Rubenstein at 140-5 and Sam Luzuriaga at 122-8 placed 4-8. Raider Noah Ricca won the javelin with a throw of 166-7, followed by Blue Devils Max Cho at 161-8 and Lincoln Meyers at 156-7. Raider Brayden Gal took seventh at 150-2. Raider Anderson Pollack took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-6, while Blue DevilAndrew Geocos took fourth at 10-6.

Raiders Ian Hopkins at 14.78, Ameen Zubair at 15:03 and Justin Larkin at 15.7 finished 3-5-8 in the 110-hurdles. Hopkins was fourth in the high jump with a height of 6-2 and Chase Hagler took eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 42-7. Battle was sixth in the shot put with a shove of 46-2. McMahill finished fourth in the 200 at 22.88 and Petrassi was sixth at 23.01. McMahill was fifth in the 100 at 11.24 and Zubair was seventh at 11.3.

Blue Devils Neil Weiss, Petrassi, Chris Sanford and McMahill finished fourth in the 4×100 with a time of 43.49 and Raiders Jackson, Isaiah Williams, Pollack and Zubair finished sixth at 44.17.

For the girls, the Blue Devils did quite well in the relays beginning with Gabby Demeter, Maura Hyland, Darcy Scheiner and Sean O’Brien taking top honors in the 4×100 with a time of 48.54, followed very closely by Raiders Mia Trombetta, Keira Kelly, Keziah Acedieu and Delaney Farley at 48.58. Anna Kylish, Olivia Thornton, Regan Stevens and Lina Wright won the 4×800 at 9:43.89 and Raiders Lily Friedman, Shae Trenery, Malissa Morabito and Abi Elliott finished third at 10:00.59.

Scheiner, Alexis Ray, Kylish and Demeter finished second in the 4×400 at 3:57.25, while Raiders Farley, Tyler Midrano, Maddy Valera and Elliott finished sixth at 4:11.95. Farley won the 100 with a time of 11.93, followed by O’Brien at 12.21 and Kelly was fourth at 12.58. Farley also took first in the 200 at 24.86, followed by O’Brien at 25.17, and Scheiner finished sixth at 25.94. O’Brien was fourth in the 100-hurdles at 15.15 and Scheiner was fifth in the 400 at 58.24. Kylish at 2:21.85 and Thornton at 2:23.36 finished 3-7 in the 800.

Demeter won the high jump with a height of 5-6 and Raider Sarah Sicoli won the pole vault with a clearance of 10-6. Raider Eva Pereira was fifth at 8-6 and Blue Devil Lina Wright was sixth at 8-0. Demeter took third in the long jump with a distance of 17-5. Blue Devils Emma Pranke at 11:28.83 and Anna Youssef at 11:40.13 finished 5-7 in the 3,200. Pranke at 5:28.02 and Youssef at 5:30.13 finished 7-8 in the 1,600. Blue Devil Lilly Petrie was seventh in the 400hurdles at 1:07.58.

Blue Devil Priscilla Dayon won the javelin with a toss of 123-3. Raider Mackenzie Virgil was fourth at 1110, followed by Blue Devil Emma Sullivan at 101-0 and Raider Maggie McNulty at 100-8. Raider Danielle Kramer placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 37-0.5. Blue Devil Livia Reyes too sixth in the shot put at 31-11 and seventh in the discus at 105-1.

The Cranford Cougars won three events and placed fourth with a total of 80 at the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Championships in Washington, NJ. Kristen Fries won the shot put with a shove of 39-4.75. Sanaa Wright won the high jump with a clearance of 5-4 and IsabellaAlvarez-Gomez won the 400-hurdles with a time of 1:06.35, followed by Ellie Semple at 1:06.6, while Lilly Costello finished fifth at 1:08.84.

Alvarez-Gomez, Costello, Maddy Leonetti and Kristen Ledford finished second in the 4×400 at 4:04.47. Fries took second in the discus with a toss of 112-2. Semple was fourth in the 400 at 58.6 and Courtney Toy finished fifth in the 800 at 2:20.89. Sydney Kessler at 35-11, Damara Barnes at 35-7 and Alexa Nofi at 35-7 took 3-4-5 in the triple jump. Alexa McCoy took third in the pole vault at 8-6.

For the Cougar boys, Alex Kessler took top honors in the javelin with a toss of 158-3, followed by Will O’Keefe at 150-2. Ben Fossella at 49-8 and Cristiano Pinto at 46-2 placed 3-4 in the shot put. O’Keefe was sixth in the pole vault with a height of 10-6 and Alex Muller took eight at 10-0. Braydyn Grant took eighth in the long jump with a distance of 19-4.5
