Library Offers Preview of Events For Early October

GARWOOD — The Garwood Public Library, located at 411 Third Avenue, has announced multiple activities beginning during the first week of October. Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday and also will be closed on Monday, October 9, for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day.

Children in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to “Decorate a Wooden Bat” now through Friday, October 20. Youngsters may pick up a wooden bat (the mammals that hang upside down, not the baseball kind) from the library while they last. They are encouraged to use their imagination to decorate it for Halloween and should put their name on the back. Participants are asked to return their bats to the library for display through October 20, after which they can take them home for Halloween. Each participant will receive a goody bag when they return a decorated bat. A prize will be awarded for “favorite bat.”

The Knitting Club will gather on the Mondays of October 2, 16, 23 and 30, at 10:30 a.m. Open to all levels, from beginners to highly experienced, the club affords participants an hour of being creative and socializing. No registration is required. Yarn and needles are provided to newcomers.

Storytime will be presented on all five Tuesdays of the month, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Children are invited to join “Miss Maryanne” for stories and more. Author Laura Sassi will join the group on October 3, and costumes are optional on Halloween, October 31. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants.

School House Chess will be featured on three Thursdays, October 5, 12 and 19, at 3 p.m. Children entering second grade and up will have an opportunity to learn the rules and strategies of chess with chess pieces that have animated personalities that enable students to learn in new and exciting ways. Registration is required. Participation is limited to 14 persons.

Additional library activities for later in the month will be publicized in this newspaper. For more information and to register for programs, call (908) 789-1670 or email garwoodlibrary@garwood.org. Full information on library programs and services also can be found on the library website, www.https:// garwoodpl.org.
