Newark Man Arrested Following Domestic Incident, Standoff at Sandra Circle Residence

WESTFIELD – A Newark man was arrested on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, following the Westfield Police Department’s response to a domestic incident at a Sandra Circle residence.

According to Westfield Police Chief Christopher Battiloro, officers responded at approximately 2:52 PM to an apartment located in the Wychwood Gardens community to investigate the incident.  They determined that Adrian O’Farrill, age 42, of Newark had locked and apparently barricaded himself inside an apartment and was refusing to respond to or engage in any communication with officers.

While officers remained present at the scene and continued to attempt to communicate with O’Farrill, the female victim was transported to the Westfield Police Department where she sought and was granted a domestic violence temporary restraining order.

The Westfield Police Department then requested the assistance of Union County SWAT in serving that protective order to O’Farrill, which granted the female victim sole possession of the residence and custody of a shared child, and arresting him on criminal charges that included obstructing the administration of law.

Due to O’Farrill’s repeated refusal to exit or allow entry into the residence despite continued attempts by crisis negotiators to communicate with him, SWAT forced entry into the apartment at approximately 7:17 PM and took O’Farrill into custody without any further incident.  He has been charged with the following:

Criminal Mischief, 2C:17-3A, a crime of the third degree.

Obstructing Administration of Law, 2C:29-1A, a crime of the fourth degree.

Theft by Unlawful Taking, 2C:20-3A, a disorderly persons offense

O’Farrill was processed at the Westfield Police Department and then committed to the Essex County Jail in Newark where he shall remain pending further court proceedings.

In addition to the Westfield Police Department and Union County SWAT, the Westfield Fire Department and Union County EMS responded to this incident.  No injuries were sustained to any persons.

“I thank our Wychwood Gardens residents for their patience and cooperation while we sought to bring this incident to a successful conclusion,” stated Chief Battiloro.  “O’Farrill was never believed to be armed with any weapons at any time, and he did not present any safety concerns for other persons,” he added.

These charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Third-degree crimes generally carry a sentence of between 3 and 5 years in a state prison and a fine of up to $15,000.  Fourth-degree crimes carry a sentence of up to 18 months in a state prison and a fine up to $10,000.  Disorderly persons offenses carry a maximum sentence of up to 6 months in a county jail and a fine up to $1,000.  These potential sentences are provided solely for informational purposes, as any potential sentence is determined by a judge.
