WESTFIELD – The Westfield Memorial Library located at 550 East Broad begins March with a multitude of programs about history, health, the environment and crafts.
A special event in collaboration with the Daughters of the American Revolution will take place Saturday, March 7 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Historian Joel Farkas will present “Remember the Ladies.”
Program attendees will learn all about how men viewed women, the expectations of women, and the challenges of just being a woman. Mr. Farkas will cover the spheres of education, medicine, health, and childbirth, the country’s First Ladies and the country’s First Mother. During the program, attendees can “listen” to Abigail (Adams). On Tuesday, March 10 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., a Zoom talk on Self Care will be presented by therapist and life coach Diane Lang. Interested parties must register with their email address to receive the Zoom link a few days before the program.
“People spend much of their lives nurturing others. When we find ourselves focusing more on others instead of ourselves, we become stressed out and we can burn out,” wrote Ms. Lang in her description of the program. “Selfcare is not selfish,” she continued. It is an essential component to appreciating yourself, cultivating happiness and finding balance.”

“The Forgotten Victory Trail: The Battles of Springfield and Connecticut Farms 1780” will be presented in collaboration with the Adult School on Wednesday, March 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This is a special program in partnership with TheAdult School. It is free and open to the public, but registration through The Adult School’s website www.theadultschool.org is required, or call interested parties can call 973.443.9222.
This program from the Sons of the American Revolution and the Forgotten Victory Trail Association will discuss the last major engagements in New Jersey of the Revolutionary War in 1780 (The Battles of Springfield and Connecticut Farms), when the Continental Army and local NJ Militia successfully repelled British forces looking to capture George Washington and his army in Morristown.
The presenter, Bob Gula, will be outfitted with the full uniform of a Private in the NJ Militia during the Revolutionary War, and he will purport to be Jehiel Day (his 5x greatgrandfather), a Private in the Morris County Militia – Eastern Battalion, who fought at the Battle of Springfield.

Stormwater Management, presented by the Westfield Green Team and environmental engineer Jennifer Duckworth, will also be presented on Wednesday, March 11 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
This program is tailored for those who have been experiencing flooding of their property or would just like to be more educated about stormwater management. Topics covered will be the changing climate and weather events in Union County and the State, damages from excessive rain, and the impacts of development and local regulations to reduce runoff.
Ms. Duckworth is a Senior Environmental Engineer with Tetra Tech, specializing in stormwater management and green infrastructure. She writes and edits hazard mitigation plans and technical documents; manages contracts supporting federal, state, and local clients; supports workshops, trainings, and meetings; and designs outreach and education materials.
She serves as an adjunct professor at Kean University, on the Essex County Environmental Commission, on the Essex County Transportation Advisory Board, as the Chair of the Millburn PedestrianAdvisory Board, on the Millburn PTOC School Safety Committee, on the Jersey Water Works Green Infrastructure Subcommittee, as trustee of the Rahway River Watershed Association, and as a New Jersey Certified Master Gardener.
On Thursday, March 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., expert crafter and librarian Marge Barkan will present an adult craft on making a bunny wreath. All materials will be supplied and registration for the workshop is required.
On Thursday, March 13 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., the Beyond Divorce Support Group facilitated by licensed clinical social worker Melissa Schwartzman will continue in the library’s local history room on the second floor. Attendees will find the group offers understanding, compassion, and guidance from others
