Keeping opponents’ scoring under 40 points is usually a good sign for high school basketball teams and it certainly was for the Westfield Blue Devils when they hosted the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders on January 6. The No. 8 Blue Devils initiated influential offense in the first quarter, wobbled a bit in the second quarter but got very stingy defensively in the second half to claim a 47-32 victory. The 8-0 Blue Devils’ defense was impressive, particularly in the second half when they yielded just 13 points to the 1-5 Raiders. Even more impressive was their foul shooting. The Blue Devils went to the line 16 times and hit all 16 of their shots, 10 of them in the second half. Two of their most effective shooters accounted for 14 of them.
PASSING TO A TEAMMATE...Blue Devil tri-captain Darbey Hubner, No. 3 left, gets the ball past Raider defender Abigail Dursee, No. 3, during the game in Westfield on January 6. The Blue Devils won 47-32. David B. Corbin
