He also studied abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris and the Institute of Europe, becoming fluent in both French and German, languages he taught himself with characteristic discipline and curiosity.

Other hobbies Gene (or Joe) pursued included fly fishing, golf, and tennis among others. He had a passion for history, researching and writing about the origins of World War II and the Axis pact.

Gene was deeply spiritual person, with a strong belief in God and a particular interest in the writings of St. Augustine.

Professionally, Gene built a successful career as an investment banker at Citibank, where he applied his analytical mind and global perspective to the financial world.
