I received a Domogala campaign flyer in the mail and was dismayed that he and the local Republican Party are mimicking the divisive tactics we are witnessing in our national politics. The last thing our tight-knit community needs is for candidates to stoop to dirty campaign tactics, making baseless accusations and employ negative messaging.
The flyer makes a false statement: “New Candidate. Same Brindle agenda” and includes doctored photos of Mr. Berman and Mayor Brindle together. I emailed Mr. Domagala to ask him why he felt impelled to go negative. He responded with no message and only sent me the un-doctored version of the photos.
In contrast, all other campaign flyers I have received positive message with details candidates’ positions and agenda for our community.
Each candidate is his own person with her or his own credentials and distinct policy agenda. They should be evaluated on the merits of their candidacy and not along strict party lines.
As importantly, we should hope that whoever becomes our next mayor will continue to build on the solid record of the Town’s leadership over the past four years: fiscal responsibility, keeping our property taxes in check, making our roads and streets safer, and the sound environmental stewardship of our parks.
Westfield needs a mayor who engages, listens, unites and leads – and who steers clear of divisiveness and negativity.
