SCOTCHPLAINS/FANWOOD— The flash flood warning alerts started lighting up smartphones and text messages at mid-day on Monday, something that has become more commonplace over the past few stormy weeks. The rain started falling as the afternoon rush hour got underway and quickly intensified. Four or so hours later, upwards of at least seven inches of rain had fallen, flooding Route 22, the Park Avenue-Martine Avenue corridor and countless side streets in what was the most intense deluge of rain since September 2021, when the remnants of Hurricane Ida dumped 10 inches of rain on the area.
