SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will hear from Old Guard member Ron Weigner at its meeting on Tuesday, May 20, at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Weigner will review the Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s World War II Gathering of Warbirds.
This year, May 8 marked the 80th anniversary of V-E Day, when Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces. The museum’s 34th Annual World War II Weekend: A Gathering of Warbirds will take place at the museum June 6, 7 and 8. World War II Weekend is the main fund-raising event for the museum, which is located in the Reading Regional Airport in Pennsylvania.
The event features historic war planes and classic airliners as well as rare civilian and military aircraft. Mr. Weigner will give the Old Guard a first-hand look at museum activities illustrated with pictures and a video.
Founded in 1930, the Summit Area Old Guard meets most Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 SpringfieldAvenue, New Providence.
The Old Guard is a social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men. Dues are minimal. The group provides speakers and multiple activities through its members’ volunteer efforts. Old Guard programs are free and open to the public. The group’s motto is “Come for the Programs. Stay for the Friends”. The following Tuesday, May 27, the Old Guard will have as its guest speaker Kathleen Waldron, vicepresident of regulatory affairs for AbbVie. AbbVie was spun off from Abbott Labs in 2013 and is a research- based pharmaceutical company concentrating on discovering and developing advanced therapies for complex diseases.
