Blue Devil Boys Jar Raiders, 8-4, in Semi Stun Summit, 6-5, for UCT Lax Crown

The second-seeded Westfield High School boys lacrosse team defeated the third-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders, 8-4, in the semifinal round of the Union County Tournament (UCT) at ALJ High School in Clark on May 8. Two days later, the 12-5, No. 10 Blue Devils stunned the top-seeded, No. 4 Summit Hilltoppers, 6-5, for the UCT Championship in Clark. Senior attacker Colin Coyle finished with two goals and an assist for the Blue Devils against the Raiders. Koby Waldman and Christian Gilford each scored twice. Luke Gerne and Luke Angelo each scored once.

Nick Homer finished with a goal, assist and three ground balls for the 10-6 Raiders. Ryan Mauer won all 16 of his face-offs and scooped 15 ground balls. Connor Scarpa scored once and scooped two ground balls.Asher Silva had a goal and a ground ball. Colin Kochanowicz had an assist and scooped two ground balls. Lou Kelly scooped three ground balls. Caleb McDowell, Callum Fynes and Caden Matulonis each scooped two ground balls. Goalkeeper Joe Marranca recorded six saves. Against the 11-3 Hilltoppers, the Blue Devils were put on the defensive the majority of the time when Andrew Smallwood won 11 of his 14 face-offs. The Blue Devils trailed 3-1 at the half but found the mark with four goals in the third quarter to seize a 5-3 lead entering the final quarter. Ben Seward netted a pair of goals and Coyle had a goal and an assist.Angelo, Billy Gerne and Garrett Ferguson each scored once and Harrison Rekemeier provided an assist. Corey Gilford made 12 saves.

Will Iacovelli scored twice for Summit and James Grainger had a goal and an assist. Quinn Hynes and Cooper Smoragiewicz each scored once. Jack Freemanhadtwoassistsandgoalkeeper Robbie Kievit made seven saves.
