I am a professor at NJ Medical School. I’ve been a biomedical scientist and educator funded by the National Institutes Health (the NIH), the American Heart Association and other health agencies for over three decades. Recently, one of my projects involved kidney disease which impacts 6 millionAmerican adults. Men with end stage kidney disease are more likely to die than women. To understand the impact of sex on kidney disease, I’ve compared male and female mice. Recently while writing up this work, I found myself avoiding the word “women” because I heard it was on list of words that could trigger government review of a federal grant proposal. But then I was flummoxed because “females” is on the list too.
