Let’s Change Trenton: Steve Fulop for Governor

Let’s Change Trenton: Steve Fulop for Governor

As we approach the June 10 primary and with mail-in ballots starting to hit homes this week, I want to share why I’m proudly endorsing Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop to be our next Governor—and why I believe he’s the right leader for New Jersey at this critical moment.

In my eight years as Mayor of Westfield, I have seen firsthand how legislation and budgets get passed in Trenton that generate positive headlines for legislators, yet push burdens and costs to municipalities and taxpayers, allowing legislators to avoid any accountability for their local impact, including property tax increases. We bear the burden of these unfunded mandates, whether it be affordable housing or stormwater management requirements. I believe only a successful mayor with Steve’s executive experience in running and positively transforming New Jersey’s second largest city can lead the reforms needed to make our state more affordable, efficient, and accountable, and demand better from our legislators.

Steve understands that New Jersey’s challenges stem from a broken political system. He has consistently demonstrated the courage and vision to take on the establishment—and win— delivering real results for his constituents. Steve is the only candidate that has shared detailed policy proposals, while also recognizing that proposing solutions to our state’s toughest challenges without a specific and courageous commitment to changing the culture in Trenton is meaningless. His bold choice to announce South Orange Mayor Sheena Collum—a widely respected and reform- minded leader—as his running mate before the primary is just one example of his willingness to do things differently. Together, they’ll enter Trenton beholden to no one but the voters.

I pride myself on being a pro-business, results-driven pragmatic Democrat as the first female Mayor of Westfield and a lifelong champion for women leaders. As such, many have expected me to support Mikie Sherrill. My decision to support Steve wasn’t automatic—it was earned. Mikie continues to be a much needed voice in congress for NJ, but holding federal office, without ever holding local or state office, doesn’t translate to effective governance of our state on day one.

Please take the time to read Steve’s detailed policy proposals at stevenfulop.com. You’ll understand why I’ve joined dozens of local elected officials and mayors across New Jersey in supporting Steve Fulop- the one candidate who not only can win in November but will deliver real, long-overdue change in Trenton. He’s on no one’s side but ours.

Please join me in casting your vote for Steve on June 10!

Shelley Brindle
Mayor, Town of Westfield
