Donald Kern

Donald Kern, 91, Devoted to His
Family, Faith and Community

Donald Kern, 91, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, in Livingston, New Jersey.

Born on February 28, 1933, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Donald pursued his education at Phillips Academy- Andover before earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Haverford College. His academic journey laid the foundation for a life marked by intellectual curiosity and dedication to service.

Donald served his country with distinction in the Army, working in intelligence. His commitment to duty was matched by his devotion to his community and faith. A longtime member of the All Saints’ Episcopal Church, he played an active role as warden, served on the vestry, and led the search committee when the church sought a new rector. His leadership and steadfast faith left a lasting impact on those around him.

Beyond his professional and community contributions, Donald found joy in many pursuits. He was an avid writer and reader who delighted in exploring new ideas. He enjoyed swimming, bike riding, and fishing — activities that connected him with nature and brought him peace. His love for museums reflected his appreciation for history and culture, while singing in the church choir allowed him to share his voice with others. Gardening provided him with a sense of tranquility, and astronomy fueled his fascination with the universe.

Donald will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Barrie Bell Kern; his daughters, Wendy Kern Murphy and Amy Kern; his son-in-law, Michael Murphy; his grandson, Sean Murphy, and Sean’s wife, Christine; and his great- granddaughter, Catriona. He was predeceased by his grandson, Conor Murphy, as well as his brothers, Richard and Robert Kern, and their wives, Anne and Janet. His beloved dog, Santo, was a constant companion who brought him great joy.

Those who knew Donald will remember him as a caring, kindhearted, and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. His presence enriched the lives of many, and he will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 11 a.m., at the All Saints’ Episcopal Church, located at 559 Park Avenue, Scotch Plains, New Jersey 07076.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in his name to the All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
