Born Elizabeth Jane Shoemaker on October 12, 1928 in Chicago, Ill., to John and Martha Shoemaker, she was the eldest of three children. Bette graduated from Mundelein College as a dietician and worked in the hospital field. She met her future husband, Milt Kupfer, on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend and Milt’s college mate at Notre Dame. They were married at St. Genevieve’s Church in Chicago on July 12, 1952. Bette and Milt had six children, five daughters and a son, and raised their family in Westfield, N.J., after Milt was transferred to New York City for his career with Deloitte. Bette was involved in many Westfield organizations, including Rake and Hoe, the Garden Club, Newcomers, Gourmet Group, Crafty Ladies and Echo Lake Country Club, where she made lifelong friendships. She also enjoyed bridge, paddleball, bowling and reading — especially The New York Times. Bette and Milt were active parishioners of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Westfield. After a busy life caring for her large family, Bette and Milt spent time traveling, wintering in Sanibel and The Forest in Fort Myers, Fla., and enjoying their five grandchildren. Bette is predeceased by her beloved husband, Milt. She is survived by her sister, Susan Kelley; her six children and their spouses, Mary Lou Kupfer, Barbara and Steve Sinko, Larry and Joanie Kupfer, Nancy Kupfer, Jane Kupfer Pelletier and Margie and Glenn Kurpit; and her five grandchildren. She will be interred at Notre Dame alongside her husband and a private memorial service for family members will be held in her honor.
