ARTISTIC INITIATIVE...Jenn Barbera, a special-education teacher at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark, along with the administrative team, received a $5,000 grant through the New Jersey Education Association to incorporate art into social-emotional learning (SEL) topics in her classroom. On September 26, licensed art therapist Samantha Commarato visited Ms. Barbera’s classroom and worked with the students on SEL topics. The students participated in two activities; the first being to pick a color and draw the emotion that the color represents, and the second was writing their names and drawing objects and pictures that represent who they are. “SEL is something that is very important to me, and I love the idea of incorporating it more into my class alongside art. A huge thank you to Mrs. Christine Broski for helping me write the grant, and Mrs. Tara Oliveira, Mrs. Katrina Poskay, Dr. Heather Austin, Mr. Chris Marcin and Mr. Andrew Amendola for supporting this project,” said Ms. Barbera.
