SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will present Ron Brachman, an internationallyknown expert in Artificial Intelligence, at its meeting on Tuesday, December 3.
In 2023, Mr. Brachman retired from his positions as the director of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech and professor of computer science at Cornell University. He also has held research leadership positions at Yahoo, DARPA, AT&T Labs and Bell Labs.
Mr. Brachman will discuss the significant leaps forward in Artificial Intelligence over the past several years, and examine the unexpected, humanlike blunders the programs continue to make. Briefly, the algorithms, capable of constructing solutions to many complex problems, lack what is generally perceived as “common sense.” In his talk, Mr. Brachman will consider what common sense is, what AI has tried to do about it, and what is still missing.
Founded in 1930, the Summit Area Old Guard meets most Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 Springfield Avenue, New Providence. The Old Guard is a social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men. Dues are minimal. The group provides speakers and multiple activities through the volunteer efforts of its members. Old Guard programs are free and open to the public. Past speakers and much more can be viewed at summitoldguard.org.
The group’s remaining speaker for 2024 will be James M. Kossler, who will discuss the FBI versus the Cosa Nostra at the Old Guard meeting on Tuesday, December 10. Mr. Kossler spent 23 years as an FBI agent and was the coordinating supervisor for the New York office responsible for directing the Organized Crime unit. As an expert witness, he testified in numerous mob trials in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
