There would be little time for an upset in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 first round game between the third-seeded Westfield High School boys soccer team and the 14th-seeded JP Stevens Hawks at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield on November 5. After being somewhat shocked by a penalty kick (PK) seven minutes into the game, the 16-2-3 Blue Devils poured on the offensive power and downed the 8-10-1 Hawks, 7-1.
“The start is obviously not what we were looking for. Giving up an early goal I think in some ways, gave us a little extra drive and our boys had a great response scoring six goals before the end of the half,” Blue Devil Head Coach Eric Shaw said.
Junior forward Sam Judka was at the head of that quick response that incurred the wrath of the Blue Devils after that PK. Judka scored three of the first four goals for a “Hat Trick” and senior midfielder Henry Iannuzzi netted the third goal and dished out three assists. Senior midfielders Will Sun and Sam Zafra, along with junior midfielder Alex Rokhsar scored the other goals. Senior Austin Williams had two assists, while junior Ben Lyons and Lucas Grygiel each had one assist. Splitting time in goal, junior Simeon Gunsberg and Danny Garcia each had one save.
