What appeared to be the making of a wipeout turned out to be merely a mirage when St. Anthony piled up the offense on St. Vincent in the first inning of the St. Bart’s Oldtimers Men’s Softball League Championship Game at Brookside Park in Scotch Plains on Labor Day, September 2. From that point onward, St. Vincent introduced a gradual offensive comeback and added a 1-2 knockout punch on the mound to seize the crown with a 13-6, nineinning triumph. Just prior to the start of the game, St. Bart’s veteran Gus Alvarez was given the honor of throwing out the first pitch. Alvarez, who had been with the League for nearly 28 years and was on several championship teams, will be leaving New Jersey with his family and settling in North Carolina.
