National Nights Out Postponed Due To Storms

AREA — This summer – which has produced more than its fair share of torrential rains and heavy storms – has proven to be a challenging one for community event organizers. Last week, dozens of National Night Out celebrations were cancelled or postponed due to inclement weather.

National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, was established in 1984 as a way for residents to connect with their local first responders in a family-friendly environment.

Westfield’s event, which will run from 6 to 9 p.m. in the North Avenue train station parking lot, has been rescheduled until Tuesday, August 20, and Mountainside will hold their National Night Out festivities will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Borough Hall parking lot on Tuesday, August 13.

Scotch Plains, Cranford and Fanwood cancelled their events due to the storms, and as of the date of publication, do not have plans to reschedule.

Clark’s event has been cancelled as well, but representatives from the township’s police department said via social media that the township will be hosting “a future event” at some point in the fall.
