Old Guard to Hear About Ludwig Cancer Research Inst.

SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will feature Pat J. Morin, Ph.D., deputy scientific director and communications director for the Ludwig Cancer Research Institute, at its meeting on Tuesday, July 9.

Dr. Morin will discuss the history of the Institute, its 11 centers in the United States and Europe, and current developments in cancer research. This lecture will be presented on Zoom only. Interested persons are advised that, although Dr. Morin will appear on Zoom, the Old Guard welcomes the public to attend the meeting and lecture in person.

Founded in 1930, the Summit Area Old Guard meets most Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 Springfield Avenue, New Providence.

The Old Guard is a social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men. Dues are minimal. The group provides speakers and multiple activities through the volunteer efforts of its members.

Old Guard programs are free and open to the public. The group’s motto is “Come for the Programs.

Stay for the Friends.” Past speakers and much more can be viewed at summitoldguard.org.

Upcoming presentations include the following: July 16 — Christopher Fiore, deputy director of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, who will speak on “Jersey City: The Sixth Borough.” In his talk, Mr. Fiore will review the phenomenal recent development of Jersey City.

July 23 — Bryan Felt, Seton Hall University Pirates athletic director, who will tell the story of Seton Hall athletics, its recent hoops resurgence, and new practice facility and golf success. Being on the frontlines of the new era of college sports, Mr. Felt also will discuss NIL (name, image and likeness) payments and the NIL portal.

July 30 — Michael Gomez, Ph.D., president of St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, founded in 1872, will speak.
