Library to Present Nat. Parks,

SCOTCH PLAINS — The Scotch Plains Public Library has announced three events that will take place at the library during the month of July.

“Explore America’s National Treasures: National Parks Unveiled” will be presented on Thursday, July 11, from 7 to 8 p.m. Professional traveler Chris McCormack will share the beauty, adventure and cost-saving tips for exploring the most breathtaking national parks in the United States. Currently there are around 1,200 national parks in over 100 countries — and it all started in the United States.

Congress established the world’s first national park in 1872, designating Yosemite “as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Today, over 400 sites are administered by the United States’ National Parks Service, with the most visited including the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Princess Bride quote-along movie event will be held on Saturday, July 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. The 1987 feature film stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant and Chris Sarandon. Rated PG, the movie runs 98 minutes in length. The Criterion website states, “Directed by Rob Reiner from an endlessly quotable script by William Goldman, The Princess Bride reigns as a fairy-tale classic.”

Participation is not required, but it is encouraged. This event is for all ages. Participants under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required for each event participant. Priority will be given to Scotch Plains adult cardholders and space is limited.

The library’s Craft Workshop Series: Introduction to Crochet will continue on Monday, July 22, with “Granny Squares,” taking place from 10 to 11 a.m. Participants will learn how to make a magic circle, switch colors, and combine stitches in order to make granny squares. Attendees are welcome to bring their own hooks, and all will have the option to bring supplies home for additional practice. Registration is required.

For more information or to register for The Princess Bride quote-along movie event or Granny Squares, go to www.scotlib.org, email library@scotlib.org or call (908) 3225007, extension no. 204. The Scotch Plains Public Library is located at 1927 Bartle Avenue.
