Old Guard Set to Welcome Hudson County Executive
RAIN GARDEN VISIT...The Garden Club of Westfield visited the Tamaques Park rain garden on May 31 to learn how this garden of native plants is designed to capture, direct and filter stormwater. Built in 2020 by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program and the Westfield Department of Public Works, this garden is maintained by volunteers from the Westfield Green Team. For more information, contact Greenteam@westfieldnj.gov. Garden and landscape designer Bianca Wright led the tour, which concluded at her home garden, where she applied similar design principles to solve her backyard’s soggy condition and create a delightful outdoor space filled with native plants. Ms. Wright is shown speaking to Garden Club members.

Old Guard Set to Welcome Hudson County Executive

SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will present Craig Guy, county executive of Hudson County, at its Tuesday, July 2 meeting. He will spotlight “The Resurgence of Hudson County, and the Process of Building a New County Courthouse.”

Mr. Guy will discuss the population growth in Hudson County and other new developments. He also will cover new initiatives by the county and tell the story of the new Hudson County Courthouse, which is 95 percent complete after only three and a half years.

Founded in 1930, the Summit Area Old Guard meets most Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 Springfield Avenue, New Providence. The Old Guard is a social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men. Dues are minimal, and the group provides speakers and multiple activities through the volunteer efforts of its members. Old Guard programs are free and open to the public. Past speakers and much more can be viewed at summitoldguard.org.

Upcoming Old Guard presentations include the following: July 9 — Pat Morin, Ph.D., deputy scientific and communication director for the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. He will discuss the history of the Institute, its research at its 11 centers in the United States and Europe, and current developments in cancer research. This presentation will be on Zoom only. July 16 — Christopher Fiore, deputy director of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, will speak on “Jersey City: The Sixth Borough.”

July 23 — Bryan Felt, Seton Hall University Pirates athletic director, will tell the story of Seton Hall athletics, its recent hoops resurgence, and new practice facility and golf success. Mr. Felt also will discuss NIL (name, image and likeness) payments and the NIL portal.

July 30 — Michael Gomez, Ph.D., president of St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, will speak.
