SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will feature Robert E. Potok at its meeting on Tuesday, June 11. Dr. Potok will present “Shadows of the Mind — A Theory of Human Consciousness.”
Holding a Doctor of Science degree in nuclear engineering, Dr. Potok spent his career in data science and research in both the physical and marketing fields. He also has published a work of “hard science fiction.” His discussion posits that consciousness is what gives people a shared human experience.
Founded in 1930, the Summit Area Old Guard meets most Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 SpringfieldAvenue, New Providence.
The Old Guard is a social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men. Dues are minimal. The group provides speakers and multiple activities through the volunteer efforts of its members.
Old Guard programs are free and open to the public. The group’s motto is “Come for the Programs. Stay for the Friends.”
Past speakers and much more can be viewed at summitoldguard.org.
Upcoming presentations include: June 18 — “How the Universe Came to be Smooth and Flat,” with Dr. Paul Steinhardt, Albert Einstein Professor of Physics at Princeton University.
June 25 — William L. Tittle, former Old Guard director, will speak on “Does Anyone Have a Credo?” Mr. Tittle will attempt to bring the previous three speakers’ ideas together by building a theme that converges their talks covering politics, human consciousness and the universe, with the idea of a personal credo on what each person concludes about life.
