James McIntyre Blackwood, M.D.; Enjoyed Family, Sports and Music

James McIntyre Blackwood, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, surrounded by his family at home in Mountainside. Born in New Brunswick, he was a resident of Mountainside for 54 years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3, at 2 p.m., at the Unitarian Church in Summit, New Jersey, with a reception to follow.

Dr. Blackwood was a graduate of Westfield High School, class of 1949. He attended Cornell University, where he played clarinet in the marching band, joined the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, and obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1953. After working as a chemical engineer for SOHIO in Cleveland, Ohio, for four years, he studied medicine at New York University, receiving his M.D. in 1962. He completed his residency at Ohio State University, where he met the love of his life, Sandra. James began his medical career at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1968 as an Assistant Professor of General Surgery, and later became a Professor of Trauma Surgery and Director, Surgical Intensive Care, retiring in 1996.

He was active in many professional associations, including the New Jersey Society of Critical Care Medicine, where he served as President; the Society of Critical Care Medicine, The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Trauma Society, and the American Medical Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed building and programming computers, stereos and TVs, playing the piano, and listening to classical music, jazz and opera. A talented self-taught cook, he was revered as the family chef. He was a fan of the Cleveland Browns, an avid skier and reader, and loved cats.

He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Pauline, and his brother, David.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 57 years, Sandra; his beloved daughters, Elizabeth Troxler and her husband, Mark, and Janet Blackwood; his sister, Helen Josey; his grandchildren, Jessica, Madison and Jacob Troxler; and his nieces and nephews, David, Jim, Bill and Monica Blackwood, and Cliff Josey.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
