Obituaries

Daniel T. Gates

Daniel T. Gates, age 69, of Doylestown, Pa., died on Sunday, May 12, 2024, following a valiant, two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He previously lived in Westfield, N.J., for 28 years. Dan was born in Cambridge, Mass., in January 1955. He met the love of his life, Karen, when they were high school classmates in Acton, Mass. Dan received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with Distinction from the University of Rochester. After graduation, in 1977, Dan and Karen married and moved to New York City.

Dan completed an MBA in Finance at New York University Stern School of Business while working full time. Thereafter, he was employed by The Bank of New York for 15 years, and by Moody’s Investors Service for 25 years, where he was the Global Head of Oversight for Credit Ratings. Colleagues and friends recall Dan as a warm and highly logical person who readily assisted others with life’s challenges. He mentored many people during several decades in management roles.

He was predeceased by his mother, Joan Richardson Gates. Dan is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen Jolley-Gates of Doylestown, Pa., and their beloved sons, Andrew Gates of Hoboken, N.J. and Matthew Gates of New York City, who were always a great source of joy and pride. Other survivors include Dan’s father, Walter Gates of Charlotte, Vt.; sister, Martha Gates of Palo Alto, Calif., and spouse, Spencer Commons; brothers, Thomas Gates of Jericho, Vt., and spouse, Marilyn, Joel Gates of Mason, N.H., and spouse, Melisa, and Donovan Gates of Charlotte, Vt.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

A celebration of Dan’s life will be scheduled at a future date. Interment will be private for family at the Grand View Cemetery in Charlotte, Vermont.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Daniel to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center at giving.mskcc.org.
