Ann Heagney Weimer
Obituaries
April 17, 2024
Ann Heagney Weimer

Ann Heagney Weimer, 91, Loving Mother, Grandmother and Aunt

Ann Heagney Weimer, 91, of South Orleans, Mass., passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass. She was born on September 18, 1932, in Evanston, Illinois, to Bill Heagney and Virginia (Woodland) Heagney. Ann grew up in Havana, Cuba, where her father was employed by the First National Bank of Boston (now Bank of America). Ann was the oldest of three close sisters, together with Virginia Lynn and Elizabeth Grace (Kiki), who all attended the St. George’s School (a British high school) while in Cuba.

Ann had fond memories of growing up in Havana, where she participated in many social and athletic events with children from many countries. This exposure to other cultures and languages (Spanish, French and English) is what made her so keenly interested in people from all parts of the world and all walks of life.

Ann finished high school at Roycemore School in Evanston, Illinois, and then attended Connecticut College in New London, Conn., where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature in 1954. After graduating from Connecticut College, she was hired by Squibb & Co., where she worked as a secretary for George Weimer. After several years working together and sharing many experiences, they got engaged. In 1959, Ann and George had a double wedding in Cuba with her sister Kiki and her groom, Jim Tremain (a French Canadian). Their joint invitations were in English, French and Spanish. After a honeymoon around the world, they settled in Westfield, N.J., where they raised their three children, Lisa, Chip (George Jr.) and Bill.

In 1965, Squibb International transferred George and the family to Beirut, Lebanon, with George’s territory extending to South Africa and India. During the Six Day War in 1967, the family was evacuated to Greece, where they spent several weeks before being allowed to return to their home in Lebanon. Following the three years abroad, the family returned to Westfield, N.J., where Ann was very active in the community. She was a volunteer for the Westfield Fire and Rescue Squad, Westfield Service League and enjoyed her participation in the local Spanish Club. She was also an active communicant at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mountainside, N.J. She loved sports, particularly tennis and paddle tennis. Ann truly loved people and would find ways to make conversation with anyone who crossed her path. She was a very loving and generous person who emphatically welcomed all visitors to her home, including family, friends and relatives, and she frequently hosted foreigners from other countries, including Costa Rica, Egypt and Palestine.

Ann leaves behind her three children, their spouses, and nine grandchildren who she adored: Lisa Finneran (husband Tom and children Thomas, Megan and Ryan); Chip (George Jr.) Weimer (wife Mary and children Christopher, Emily and Elizabeth); and Bill Weimer (wife Irene and children Willy, Andrew and Michael). Other family members include her nieces, Trish Tremain-Wiberg and Daryl Tremain, and her brother-in-law, Stan Ziobro. She was predeceased by her husband, George, and by her sisters, Elizabeth Grace (Kiki) and Virginia Lynn, and her brother-inlaw, Jim Tremain.

A celebration of Ann’s life will take place on Friday, May 3, at 11 a.m., at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, Mass. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, N.J., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers and in celebration of Ann’s life, donations can be made to The St. Vincent de Paul Society, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, MA 02653, or St. Joseph Social Service Center, 118 Division Street, Elizabeth, N.J. 07201.
