Letters to the Editor, Opinions

Voters Should Know Where Tom Kean Stands on Issues

The purpose of this letter is to provide NJ District 7 voters with a view of Tom Kean Jr.’s key votes in Congress and previously in his role as NJ State Representative. Since Rep. Kean refuses to hold district meetings in his hometown of Westfield, I wanted to ensure area constituents were clear in his positions. Below is a subset of key votes, however I encourage all voters to research Tom Kean Jr’s record themselves: 1. Against Reproductive Freedom / A Woman’s Right to Choose.

As a NJ state representative, Kean voted against a bill establishing the constitutional right to reproductive freedom of choice in NJ.

2. Against Supporting Marginalized and Disadvantaged People.

Against Tax Relief for American Families & Worker Act: Voted against extending the ChildTax credit that lifted 50 percent of American children out of poverty.

Against SNAP food assistance, farm subsidies and FDA funding: Voted against providing Federal Funding for Agriculture, and Rural Development impacting families receiving food assistance.

Against Student Loan Forgiveness: Voted against student loan forgiveness.

3. Environmental Record. Against Clean Renewable Energy: Co-sponsored a bill limiting the drawdown of petroleum in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve until the Department of Energy develops a plan to increase the percentage of federal lands leased for oil and gas production. Voted to Expand Fossil Fuel Production Voted to pass a bill that appropriates funding for the exploration, development, importation, and exportation of energy resources (e.g., oil, gas, and minerals).

Against CleanAir (yes, really):Voted to repeal and nullify EPA rules relating to Control of Air Pollution From New Motor Vehicles: Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle Standards (88 Fed. Reg. 4296).

Against Solar Energy Certification Programs: As NJ state representative, Kean Jr. voted against a clean energy bill that established a Renewable Solar Energy Certificate Program in NJ.

Against Protecting Wildlife and Endangered Species: Voted to repeal and nullify the final rule issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service titled Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Endangered Species.

Against expanding EV charging stations: Voted against removing waivers to non-American made EV chargers to more quickly expand federal charging stations.

4. Protecting Communities. Against Gun Regulation for Stabilizing Firearms: Voted to repeal a rule on criteria for firearms equipped with a stabilizing brace for shoulder fire is a rifle subject to regulation (e.g., registration) under the National Firearms Act.

5. Performative Politics: Siding with Republican Extremists.

Voted to investigate Joe Biden for impeachment based on zero evidence.

Voted to impeach Sec. of Homeland Security Mayorkas for high crimes and misdemeanors while voting againsta bi-partisan comprehensive border bill passed by the senate.

Voted yes to Jim Jordan’s request to form a subcommittee to investigate the bi-partisan January 6th Committee findings.

With so much at stake in this election, NJ7 Voters need to be informed on where Tom Kean Jr. stands on issues that matter – supporting families, women’s healthcare, clean energy, gun violence. Rep. Kean’s voting record makes it clear his politics are too extreme to stand behind.
