Vehicle Crashes Into North Avenue Home

WESTFIELD — The driver of a motor vehicle that crashed into a North Avenue residence on Monday has been charged with a moving violation by the Westfield Police Department.

The home, a two-and-a-half-story residence, has been deemed uninhabitable due to structural damages sustained during the incident.

According to official reports, the WestfieldFireDepartmentrespondedto the scene at approximately 3:25 p.m. to find“avehiclehalfwaythroughthefoundation of the right side of the residence.”

“Immediately, fire units confirmed all occupants were accounted for from the vehicle and the residence was safely evacuated,” Fire Chief Michael Duelks said via a press release. “Upon further investigation, Fire Department personnel found severe structural damage to the foundation and floor joists of division one. The right side of the dwelling, along with an exterior porch, was no longer supported through the structural foundation and was in danger of a collapse.”

Despite “extreme shoring measures” by first responders, Chief Duelks said the property will need to be vacated “until proper construction takes place” to repair the damage.

Multiple agencies, including the Union County Tech Rescue Task Force, the Westfield Police Department and the Westfield Rescue Squad, Union Squad, Elizabeth Engine 7, Elizabeth Rescue 1, Elizabeth Ladder 1, Millburn Shoring Unit, and Newark Rescue 2, plus a number of other emergency medical services teams from throughout the region, were dispatched to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Traffic was re-routed for several hours.

All fire department units cleared the scene at 7:20 p.m.
