The Westfield Foundation and Second Street Youth Center – Dedicated to Growth

Although relatively new, the collaboration between the Westfield Foundation and Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) in Plainfield exemplifies an alignment of missions and goals aimed at empowering communities. Through our quarterly grants, The Westfield Foundation’s support helps to implement impactful initiatives at SSYC.

SSYC’s mission focuses on providing comprehensive support to children and families, nurturing competencies, self-esteem, and self-reliance through educational, recreational, and social activities. This resonates strongly with the Westfield Foundation’s vision of fostering vibrant and resilient communities.

In 2023, with a $20,000 grant, the Westfield Foundation funded The Navigator program, which has been instrumental in providing bilingual case management, workshops, and behavioral support for families and teachers. With a focus on overcoming barriers such as internet access and literacy challenges, the Navigator empowers families to access essential services and resources.

To build on this ease in accessibility between families and staff, in Q1, 2024, The Foundation granted nearly $20,000 to install WiFi access points in 14 classrooms, enhancing educational opportunities and infrastructure. Additionally, a new phone system ensures accessibility for SSYC Navigator and Outreach staff to serve the community effectively.

The shared commitment to community development serves as a powerful catalyst for positive change, creating opportunities and pathways to success for local children and families.

The Westfield Foundation’s purpose is to promote the betterment of Westfield New Jersey and its surrounding communities by enhancing the quality of life for all of its citizens.

Our areas of focus include but are not limited to capital projects and improvements within Education, The Arts, Health and Human Services, Historic Preservation, Civic Projects, and Community development.

Our grants provide innovative and strategic responses to recognized community needs.

We aim to partner with agencies and institutions to strengthen their services to the local community.
