Historical Society to Screen Easter Parade

SCOTCH PLAINS — The Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood will screen the classic 1948 movie musical Easter Parade, starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland, as the program for its meeting on Tuesday, March 27.

When Don Hewes loses his partner, Nadine, to the allure of a solo career, the acclaimed dancer spots lovely chorus- line performer Hannah and pledges to turn her into Nadine’s equal within a year. Can he and Hannah be ready in time for the big Fifth Avenue Easter Parade?

The “movie theater” opens at 7:15 p.m., in time for people to get their popcorn and water and find their seats, as opening credits will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. The movie is an hour and a half in length, so there will be a chance for intermission. The seats are folding chairs, so attendees are advised to bring a seat pad for comfort.

Since the program is so close to Easter, people are encouraged to come in their Easter outfits, or to at least wear or bring an Easter hat. The Historical Society will have a table of antique Easter hats on display at the meeting. Those interested can share stories about their outfits, and attendees can even do their own Easter Parade, if inspired.

Historical Society member Glenn Mongold came up with the idea for the evening’s cinema event and will serve as Master of Ceremonies. He and his wife have been residents of Scotch Plains for 15 years and have raised their three children in the community. Mr. Mongold has been very active as a Cub Scout Leader and in the Knights of Columbus at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. He presently works for Konica Minolta.

Refreshments and fellowship will follow the movie. The meeting will take place at Shady Rest Country Club, located at 820 Jerusalem Road, at the corner of Plainfield Avenue, in Scotch Plains. For further information, call Connie Klock at (908) 337-7735.
