Library Director to Speak to Summit Area Old Guard

SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will meet next on Tuesday, February 27. Amy Behr-Shields, the director of the Summit Free Public Library, will be the guest speaker.

Ms. Behr-Shields will explain how libraries are needed to curate reliable sources of information and to manage the complexities of digital and non-digital media while serving as a community center and a welcoming environment. The Summit Free Public Library is celebrating its 150th anniversary, having begun as a Carnegie library. It offers varied programs and services, among them notary services.

The Summit Area Old Guard was founded in 1930 and meets at 10 a.m. most Tuesdays at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 Springfield Avenue, New Providence.

A social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men, the Summit Area Old Guard provides speakers and multiple activities through the volunteer efforts of its members. Its motto is “Come for the Programs. Stay for the Friends.”

Old Guard programs are free to the public and all are welcome. Past speakers and much more can be viewed at summitoldguard.org. Upcoming presentations include the following.

March 5 — Gregory J. Kaczorowski, Ph.D., researcher of human cell ion channels.

March 12 — Jessica Arkel, the development officer at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.

March 19 — Professor Dennis Liotta, a virologist with decades of research and successes in antivirals, oncology and neurology.
