WESTFIELD — In a significant step forward in the fight against rising crime, home invasions, and attempted car thefts in Westfield and across the state of New Jersey, Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis recently introduced the groundbreaking crime bill A3806 in the New Jersey General Assembly. This necessary legislation is the direct result of tireless advocacy from Westfield Councilmen Todd Saunders, Dr. Mike Armento, Mike Domogala, and David Kiefer, who have worked diligently to address the concerns of Westfield residents regarding escalating crime rates.
The bill, initiated following a letter from the Westfield Councilmen to the Legislative District 21 team, embodies a proactive approach to tackling crime head-on. A3806 incorporates provisions aimed at deterring criminal activity and safeguarding communities across the state. Key highlights of the bill include: the establishment of a rebuttable presumption of pretrial detention for motor vehicle theft offenses; the enhancement of penalties for motor vehicle theft offenses, elevating them to second-degree crimes regardless of the value of the vehicle; the inclusion of motor vehicle theft offenses in the code allowing courts to revoke offenders’ driving privileges; providing authorization for the court to order home detention for offenders under 18 years old, in addition to other penalties; and the creation of the Grants for Underage Auto-Theft Risk Deterrence (“GUARD”) Program, a $7 million initiative to support communitybased organizations in deterring youth from criminal activities.
“This bill represents a critical step forward in our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” stated Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis. “I commend the leadership of Councilmen Saunders, Armento, Domogala, and Kiefer in advocating for tangible solutions to combat crime in Westfield and throughout New Jersey.”
Councilman Todd Saunders remarked, “With A3806, we are taking decisive action to protect our neighborhoods and promote a safer future for all residents of Westfield and beyond.”
Councilman Dr. Mike Armento added, “The provisions outlined in this bill demonstrate our commitment to implementing effective strategies that address the root causes of crime and promote accountability.”
Councilman Mike Domogala emphasized, “By introducing A3806, we are sending a clear message that criminal activity will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such behavior will face the consequences.”
Councilman David Kiefer concluded for the group stating, “The GUARD Program underscores our commitment to investing in preventive measures that empower our youth and steer them away from the path of crime.”
Additionally, the Westfield Councilmen collectively acknowledged the Town Council’s upcoming vote on a resolution at Tuesday night’s council meeting urging Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Legislature to act on addressing the rise in car thefts. Together they stated, “We appreciate the mayor finally recognizing that there has indeed been an increase in attempted car thefts in town after previously downplaying the severity of the problem and thank her for following our lead in speaking out about the rise in crime.”
The introduction of the crime bill A3806 marks a significant milestone in the collective efforts to create safer communities and uphold the principles of justice and security.
