SUMMIT AREA — The Summit Area Old Guard will meet on Tuesday, February 13, when the guest speaker will be either Union County Manager Ed Oatman or Deputy Manager Amy Crisp Wagner, depending on developing county business.
Attendees will learn about such county operations as law enforcement, the Superior civil and criminal courts, parks and recreation, public works, roads and infrastructure, health care, economic development, the Board of Elections, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the Union County Police, and the recording of deeds and mortgages, among other functions.
A social, recreational and educational fellowship of retired men, the Summit Area Old Guard was founded in 1930. The group meets most Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Parish Hall of the New Providence Presbyterian Church, located at 1307 Springfield Avenue, New Providence. Dues are minimal. The Old Guard provides speakers as well as multiple activities through the volunteer efforts of its members. The group’s motto is “Come for the Programs. Stay for the Friends.”
Summit Area Old Guard programs are free to the public, and all are welcome.

February 27 —Amy Behr-Shields, director of the Summit Free Public Library.
March 5 — Dr. Greg Kaczorowski, regarding ion channels, a large family of membrane proteins that are present in all cells of the human body.
