Charles George Carl

Charles George Carl, 88, Beloved Family Man, Formerly of Westfield

Charles George Carl, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 11, 2024. He was 88. Charles was born on March 26, 1935, in Orange, New Jersey, to Evelyn Hubbs and Walter John Carl. He was raised in Hammondsport, New York.

A graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Union College, and SUNY College of Education at Albany, Charles honorably served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was a high school English teacher prior to a career in banking at the Schenectady Trust Company and Wells Fargo in New Jersey.

While living in Schenectady and studying for his master’s degree at Albany, he answered a carpooling request posted by fellow education student Julianne Beattie. They married on December 26, 1960. In 1972, they moved with their six children from Schenectady to Westfield, where they lived until 2000.

Charles served his community in many ways, including as a longtime member and an officer of the New Jersey Society and West Fields Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. In addition to 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Julie survives him, as do five of their six children: James Conrad of Bridgeport, Connecticut; John Walter (Jennifer) of Pensacola; Helen Josephine of Nice, France; Anne Evelyn (Al) of Bisbee, Arizona; and Mary Julia (David) of Torrance, California. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Walter John, Jr.; his son, William Seymour; and his granddaughter, Tamara Paige Carl.

A devoted Episcopalian for most of his life, Charles converted to Catholicism, his wife’s faith, in 2010. A funeral mass is scheduled for today, Thursday, January 18, at noon, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 5200 Saufley Field Road, Pensacola. In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice.
