Gloria Mathew Nielsen, age 94, formerly of Mountainside, N.J., passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023, in Middlebury, Vt. She was born on September 22, 1929, in Hudson, N.Y., to the late Thomas Mathew and Goldina Ban Mathew.
Gloria was a vibrant and active woman who cherished her life at Echo Lake Country Club, where she enjoyed golfing and spending time with her friends.
She was an exceptional homemaker and enjoyed exploring various parts of the world alongside her beloved late husband, Edgar. As a younger person, Gloria dedicated much of her time to volunteering in Westfield, N.J., and was known for her talented cooking skills. Gloria pursued higher education at Green Mountain Junior College in Poultney, Vt. In her leisure time, Gloria found joy in her hobbies, which included golf, travel and movies.
She will be deeply missed by her surviving family, including her son Thomas Nielsen and his wife, Jane Nielsen; her daughter-in-law Laura Nielsen; her four grandchildren, Christian, Scott, Heidi and John; and her six great- grandchildren, Madelyn, Wyatt, Cecilia, Maddox, Cade and Gloria Grace (GG). She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar W. Nielsen, and her son Christian W. Nielsen. Gloria Mathew Nielsen leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a zest for life that will be remembered by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed but her memory will live on in the hearts of all her family and friends.
In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be laid to rest alongside her husband in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, any contribution in her name may be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
