SCOTCH PLAINS — The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education (BOE) met for its reorganization meeting on Thursday, which began with the board announcing the annual school-election results. With a total of 6,837 votes cast in Scotch Plains, 3,969 went to Sonali Phatak Parve and 4,356 went to Evan Murray. In Fanwood, 1,931 votes were cast, with 1,311 for Amy Boroff. The newly-elected board members were called to the front to take their oath of office. Board Secretary Christopher Jones administered the oath.

Next, the board made a motion to nominate Mr. Murray as BOE president and a motion to nominate Dr. Karen Kulikowski as vice-president. Both appointments were cemented with a roll-call vote.

The board then continued with further motions, among them one to adopt the policies and rules and regulations currently in effect in the Policy Manual.

“This is saying that we are staying with the policies and curriculum that we have every year,” Mr. Jones explained. “If any changes should need to be made to the policies, we will make those changes on a monthly basis.”

The board also agreed that it will strive to improve its code of ethics and will continue to follow the parliamentary procedures laid out in Robert’s Rules of Order.

Amy Winker and Deb Brody were appointed to serve as this year’s delegates to the Union County School Board and the Union County Educational Services Commission, respectively. Ms. Boroff, meanwhile, was named as the district’s representative to the New Jersey School Boards Association.

The board reminded residents that numerous volunteer positions are still open for the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration, scheduled to take place on Monday, January 15.
