Richard James Edge, Jr., 70,

DPW Retiree, Restored Town Bell

Richard James Edge, Jr., 70, died on Friday, December 8, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born to Richard, Sr. and Rosemary Edge, he was raised in Linden, N.J., and later moved to Westfield with his family.

Richard attended high school at Saint Benedict’s Academy in Newark, N.J. During his adolescence and teenage years, he was the United States junior champion of Irish dancing in the men’s division. He not only earned championship status but also performed on “The Johnny Carson Show” in his early years.

After high school, Rich earned a bachelor’s degree in ornamental horticulture from Delaware Valley College. Rich worked for the Department of Public Works in Westfield, N.J., until his retirement. While working there, he restored the Town Bell, which was a historic part of Westfield’s history. He also spent many years working in landscape design and construction.

Richard was highly active in both the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 3 in Westfield.

He is survived by his three children, Amy Edge, Samuel Edge and Jessica Rodriguez; his grandchildren, Ava Marie Edge and Hunter Samuel Edge; son-in-law, Herbert Rodriguez; daughter-in-law, Anya DiNitto; brother-in-law, Robert Miller; and his sisters, Rosemary Miller and Cathy Gibson.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 12 p.m., at The Church of St. Anne, 325 Second Avenue, Garwood, N.J. 07027. Cremation was private. Arrangements are in the care of Dooley Colonial Home in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to American Legion Post 3 in Westfield, 1003 North Avenue West, Westfield, N.J. 07090. Donations will benefit homeless veterans.
