Project Playground: A Place for Everyone to Play

Project Playground: A Place for Everyone to Play

In a heartwarming event on a chilly November afternoon, the Westfield community came together to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Lincoln School’s Project Playground. Esteemed members, including parents, children, and supporters, gathered against a backdrop of laughter and play.

The Westfield Foundation proudly stands as an anchor donor for this transformative project, contributing a $50,000 grant in Q2 of 2023. The driving force behind this initiative, led by Erica Witte with Laura Skidmore, Reema Thakkar and a 10 person committee, aligns seamlessly with the Foundation’s commitment to fostering positive change within the community.

The playground, a symbol of unity, is designed to enrich the lives of numerous students and families, fostering a sense of belonging for all children. Featuring six pieces of accessible and inclusive equipment, communication boards, and inclusive signage, it stands as a testament to the commitment to inclusive play for future generations.

Colleen Thorburn, Westfield Foundation Trustee and Steward of the Grant, shared her insights, stating, ‘From the moment Erica presented this project and its need, I knew their goals aligned with The Foundation. This project resonated with us immediately, echoing our involvement in the Mindowaskin Park playground revamp, one of the first accessible play spaces in our area.’

Notably, the Westfield Foundation’s connection to the playground extends to the innovative contributions of Westfield High School students. Items created in their ‘Innovation Lab,’ funded by the Foundation in 2018, have found a place in this inclusive space, further highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines Westfield’s community initiatives.
