WESTFIELD – Westfield Community Players announces audions for “An Inspector Calls,” a mystery by J.B. Priestley.

WESTFIELD – Westfield Community Players announces audions for “An Inspector Calls,” a mystery by J.B. Priestley.

Set in the North of England in April of 1912, the prosperous Birling family has gathered in the drawing room to celebrate the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Gerald Cro, heir to the most successful family business in the North of England. Their celebraon is interrupted when Edna, the maid, announces the unexpected arrival of Inspector Goole, investigating the suicide of a young woman. As the Inspector’s quesons unravel the mystery, secrets are revealed and each member of the family is linked to the tragedy. After the inspector’s departure, a few twists have everyone wondering what, if anything, really happened.

Director Cass Cochrane is looking to ûll the following roles: Arthur Birling (male, mid-50s to 60): prosperous manufacturer who is eager to improve his social standing. He is self-conscious about being from a working-class background and overcompensates.

Sybil Birling (female, 50s): Arthur’s wife and his social superior. Gracious but somewhat aloof. She is rarely, if ever, wrong.

Sheila Birling (female, 20s): Arthur and Sybil’s daughter, she is delighted about her engagement. A giddy and naïve young woman.

Eric Birling (male, 20s): Arthur and Sybil’s son, Sheila’s older brother. Rebellious, awkward, moody, and ill-at-ease. He has a drinking problem.

Gerald Cro (male, 30s): Sheila’s new fiancé. Handsome, well-bred, charming, condent, upper class.

Inspector Goole (male, 40-60): Curious, keenly observant, blunt, and authoritave. Working class.

Edna (female, any age): The Birlings maid, working class.

Ages listed reflect how the character should appear onstage, not necessarily the age of the actor. Accents are not what the play is about but a standard, educated, upper class English accent should be evident. Some atempt at accent should be made at the audition.
