Defensive stubbornness on the part of both teams forced an overtime period but junior midfielder Caden Matulonis struck gold to earn the fifth-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys soccer team a 1-0 victory over the 14th-seeded 6-9-3 Perth Amboy Panthers in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Tournament at Scotch Plains on October 25. Raider senior goalkeeper Jeff Dietrich recorded no saves. The victory catapulted the 10-4-3 Raiders into a showdown in Flemington with the fourth-seeded Hunterdon Central Red Raiders, who had defeated the 11th-seeded Watchung Hills Warriors, 1-0. In that game, co-captain Aaron Casterlow scored on an assist from JayvonYoung to send the Raiders to the semifinal against the eighth-seeded Ridge Red Devils, who upset top-seeded Newark East Side in a shootout. Dietrich recorded three saves.
