Commemoration to Feature Kristallnacht Survivor

SCOTCH PLAINS — Temple Sholom will present a program commemorating Kristallnacht that will be held this Sunday, November 5, beginning at 7 p.m.

Kristallnacht, a mass assault on the Jewish communities in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, took place on November 9 and 10, 1938. Guest speaker Norbert Strauss, who was an 11-year-old living in Germany on the night of Kristallnacht, will tell the harrowing story of his family’s escape from Nazi Germany to the United States.

Mr. Strauss brings a unique perspective to the presentation because his father served in the German army during World War I and because his family booked passage on the St. Louis, a ship full of Jews that was turned back to Europe after being refused landing in Cuba and in the United States.

Participation is hybrid, with the audience having the option of attending in person or on Zoom. The guest speaker will be joining on Zoom.

For those wishing to attend in person at 7 p.m. on November 5, Temple Sholom is located at 1925 Lake Avenue, Scotch Plains. For those who wish to join on Zoom, the link is as follows: https:// us02web.zoom.us/j/88677460763.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Anyone who needs accommodation to participate is asked to contact the Temple Sholom office at (908) 889-4900. The program will be presented through the support of the Rabbi Sidney Nathanson Fund.
