I am writing this letter in response to an action by Ward 1 Council candidate Todd Saunders that I believe goes well beyond the usual political antics that tend to occur at this point in the election season and needs to be called to voter’s attention. I believe it should be disqualifying.

This candidate for Ward 1 posted on social media claiming that the “leaders in our town have not spoken up” in regards to the attack on Israel. He did this after spending the previous evening at the temple where the Mayor spoke and the entire Council (minus Councilman Mark LoGrippo) stood in solidarity with our town’s Jewish community.

When called out on this obvious politicization of the situation, Mr. Saunders tried to flip the script and accuse the commenters of politicizing the events.

He has since tried to make an unfortunate faux pas by another candidate (which said candidate instantly and profusely apologized for) into a political headline to hide this outrageous behavior. As a Jew and a resident, I am deeply offended by Mr. Saunders trying to turn the suffering and bloodshed of thousands of people into political fodder. I am grateful for the current Administration for responding with appropriate action and support to our Jewish community as well as always providing a safe and inclusive environment for all its citizens.
