Rotary to Sponsor Collection Of Used Bicycles Saturday

WESTFIELD — Pedals for Progress, in its continuing effort to recycle bicycles properly, will hold a used-bicycle collection sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield.Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition is urged to donate it to this worthy cause.

Pedals for Progress does not accept bikes for parts or disassembled bikes. Bicycles can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday, October 7, rain or shine, at the board of education building, located at Walnut and Elm Streets in Westfield.

To date, more than 160,000 bicycles and 5,100 sewing machines have been shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. The bicycles provide reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting produce to market or accessing health care and other services.

It costs $45 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. A donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $20 per bike). All cash and material donations are fully tax-deductible and a receipt will be available at the collection site.

Pedals for Progress/Sewing Peace is a 501 (c) (3) corporation and a registered charity in six states, among them New Jersey and New York. Brochures explaining this program will be available at the collection site. Pedals for Progress seeks donations of wrenches for its overseas shops. For detailed information about overseas projects and a current schedule of bicycle collections, visit www.p4p.org.
