Martha “Lou” Driver

Martha “Lou” Driver died on August 15 of natural causes. Born on July 1, 1929, Lou graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Randolph-Macon Women’s College (now Randolph College) in 1950. One of the first six women to be admitted for graduate work at the University of Virginia, she graduated with a master’s degree in political science in 1952. Her thesis on the unconstitutionality of McCarthyism was published in two partsofthe 1952 Virginia Law Review two years prior to McCarthy’s being officially censured by his Senate colleagues for unbecoming conduct. This publication (as well as her thesis) was a brave move in a period of accusation, censorship, and blacklisting. After getting a teaching certificate from Union County Community College, Lou earned an MBA from Fordham. She then became an analyst and investment banker for Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA) in Manhattan. After leaving TIAA, she created her own investment company. She was also co-founder, with her husband, Albert W. Driver, Jr., of the Metropolitan Corporate Counsel, a monthly publication dedicated to promoting ethical practice and pro bono work. The first issue was published in September 1993; the paper

Martha “Lou” Miller Driver, MA, MBA;

Devoted to Friends, Family, and Community

reached a circulation of 30,000 before it was sold in 2014. This newspaper remains in print under the name CCBJ ( Corporate Counsel Business Journal). Lou Driver also served on the board of Overlook Hospital, Summit, and on the finance committee of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield. Lou is survived by her daughters, Martha W. Driver and Sara Driver. She was especially devoted to her Westfield friends, many of whom she had known for fifty or more years, to Echo Lake Country Club, which she enjoyed with her husband, friends and family, and to St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield. A funeral service is scheduled to be held at St Paul’s Church, 414 East Broad Street, Westfield, NJ, on Saturday, September 16, at 11 a.m.

Donations in Lou’s name may be made to St Paul’s Episcopal Church or to Overlook Medical Center.

For a church donation, please contact the Reverend Michael Morgan at St Paul’s Church, parishoffice@stpaulswestfield.org.

For a hospital donation, please contact Marianne Devlin, Director, Strategic Gifts and Board Relations at the Overlook Foundation who is also a long-time family friend, Marianne.devlin@atlantichealth.org.
