Towns Gear Up For Summer Fun, Commemorations

AREA — Now that this week’s Memorial Day ceremonies and parades have been held, some local towns are gearing up for a busy summer of events, ranging from street fairs and live music to 5K races and high-school graduations.

The Tour de Westfield bike event is set for this Sunday, June 11, at 10 a.m. Registration information is available on the town’s website. June is Pride Month, and Westfield will mark the occasion at the municipal building on Wednesday, June 7, at 6 p.m., followed by a walk to the rainbow crosswalks, with refreshments and music on Quimby Street.

Scotch Plains also will mark Pride Month tonight, June 1, at 5 p.m., at the Alan Augustine Village Green. The annual Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K will be held on Wednesday, June 14, in the downtown business district. Registration information is available on the township’s website. Juneteenth will be observed on Saturday, June 17, at the historic Shady Rest Golf and Country Club, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The annual Garwood Rocks festival will be held this Sunday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Center Street. This street fair will feature live music, food vendors, a beer garden and plenty of activities for kids.

Cranford will mark Pride Month this Saturday, June 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Eastman Clock Plaza. The following Saturday, June 10, will be Kids Day Out at Eastman Clock Plaza, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Live music and other kid-friendly activities are on the agenda. And on Saturday, June 17, at noon, there will be a Sensory-Friendly Day at the Movies at the Cranford Theater, featuring The Little Mermaid.

Fanwood will kick off the summer with its Party in the Park on Tuesday, June 27 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at La Grande Park. The first of eight weekly movies will be shown that evening. The annual Summer Fan Jam will take place on Sunday, July 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at La Grande Park.  There will be live music, a classic car show and food trucks. June also is the month for high-school commencement ceremonies, with Westfield High School and Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School handing out diplomas on Wednesday, June 21, and Cranford High School and Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark holding their graduation ceremonies on Thursday, June 22.
